Cold Compresses After Lifting Treatments: Your Questions Answered

Hello, I'm Dr. Ho Lee, medical director of Glory Clinic, a dermatology clinic in Gangnam where I personally handle every one-on-one consultation and treatment.

Today I'd like to go into detail on something many people ask after treatment: is it okay to use a cold compress after a lifting treatment? What about a warm one?

Cold compresses after pigment lasers and microneedle RF

First, setting lifting devices aside: what about cooling after a pigment treatment, which can leave your face feeling hot, or microneedle RF, which leaves it burning? The short answer is that cooling is a good idea and very effective for recovery. After pigment treatments that deliver a lot of heat, cooling the flushed skin as aftercare with a dermacooler or cryo device can greatly reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Right after microneedle RF such as Secret RF (Potenza), lowering the skin's temperature as aftercare is also helpful. I'm mentioning this first because so many people ask, "Aren't you not supposed to cool your skin after lifting?" — so you can tell the two apart.

Is a cold compress really off-limits after lifting?

The short answer is no — it's fine. Here's why. By the time you leave the clinic after a lifting treatment, the treated area is already at almost the same temperature as the rest of your body. Because a lot of heat was delivered, blood vessels dilate, so your face may feel swollen and a little warm. But the temperature that briefly rises the moment the energy is delivered doesn't last until you leave. If the 40°C-plus temperature reached for an instant during treatment stayed on your face, everyone would end up with low-temperature burns. In treatments performed by doctors, the temperature spikes for a moment but drops back to body temperature almost immediately. In fact, the tips of our devices — the part that touches your face — strongly cool the skin's surface with water cooling or nitrogen gas. In other words, cooling technology protects the surface while energy is delivered only to the inner layers, for an instant. So using a cold compress at home has no effect at all on your results.

So what do cold and warm compresses actually do?

A lifting treatment usually delivers strong energy inside the skin — to the fascia, the subcutaneous fat, or the dermis, depending on the device. Because that energy is strong, the skin improves as it heals the controlled injury and regenerates collagen. And because it is a healing response, swelling sometimes follows. Right after treatment, that swelling is part of the healing response, so a gentle cold compress can help ease it. If your under-chin area was treated, taping it up with a lifting band to prevent swelling is another option.

After two or three days, a warm compress can help ease swelling by boosting blood and lymph circulation. Light exercise that makes you sweat also helps circulation and reduces swelling. Avoid very hot saunas or jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouse saunas), though.

What to take care of after lifting

Honestly, there's something more important after a lifting treatment than warm or cold compresses: plenty of rest and good nutrition. When we deliver energy into the skin for anti-aging, the skin is injured, and it becomes firmer and lifted as it recovers. So the aftercare you can give is rest and nutrition — eat a balanced diet and rest well. Put simply, eat well and sleep well. That's also why treatments that deliver nutrients directly into the skin work so well alongside lifting. There are many skin boosters available today — Re2O, hyaluronic acid glow boosters, Rejuran, Sculptra, and more — and choosing the right one for each person's skin creates excellent synergy. More and more patients are pairing a skin booster with heat-intensive radiofrequency treatments or laser treatments such as Titanium.

Frequently Asked Questions

After a lifting treatment, can I wash my face with cold water or use a cold mask at home?

Yes, that's completely fine. By the time you get home, your skin is already at body temperature. If your face feels a little tender right after treatment, a pleasantly cool mask is very helpful. Moisturizing well, eating well, and resting well — getting a good night's sleep — matter much more. And adding a skin booster to your lifting treatment is even better.

I want to use cold and warm compresses at home after lifting. In what order?

While your face feels hot, a cool compress is best. I've occasionally seen people on social media who got frostbite from holding something too cold on their skin for too long. It doesn't need to be very cold — something pleasantly cool is enough. If you still have some swelling two or three days after treatment, a warm compress can help by boosting circulation, and light exercise that makes you sweat a little also helps the swelling go down faster. As I said above, compresses don't really make much difference; I'm only explaining the best way to use them if you do, and it isn't something we tell every patient. After lifting, good nutrition and plenty of rest are far more important.

Key Summary

  • There's no protocol showing that cold or warm compresses after lifting make a meaningful medical difference.
  • Using a cold compress at home won't meaningfully reduce your results, so there's no need to worry.
  • What matters after lifting is recovery: good nutrition and plenty of sleep.
  • If you can, add a skin booster to your lifting treatment, choosing the right one for you after a thorough consultation with your doctor.
